Personal Emergency Response Systems

One important component of a comprehensive home health care program is a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS). The overwhelming majority of people want to be able to remain at home. A PERS in the home provides for an immediate response in an emergency using a "help button" that activates a signal to the Response Center. A call center is staffed 24/7 to respond to alarms and activate an individually designated list of responders. Help is always within the reach of a button.

A PERS unit helps to increase the safety and sense of security for frail elders living at home, often living alone. Family members also have the reassurance of knowing that those they care about have the added protection they need in the event of a fall or a medical emergency. An additional value of a PERS system is that family members have the additional security of knowing that the Response Center will contact them to inform them when an event occurs in the elder's home. There is real comfort in knowing that the communication link is in place.

We have selected Link to Life as our contracted provider. Link to Life operates its own 24-hour Call Center serving all 50 states. As our contracted PERS provider with LifePlans, we have obtained reduced rates on the installation and monthly service fees for LifePlans' clients.

Home Health and Personal Emergency Response System (PERS)

Dorothy, the daughter-in-law of a woman in Kansas with insurance, called the Provider Pathway needing immediate help at home for her mother-in-law who was in the hospital after a fall at home. Dorothy's husband, Ed, was traveling from North Carolina to Kansas to make an emergency visit to his mother. The insurance company suggested that Dorothy, who was traveling in California, call the Provider Pathway to obtain the names of agencies in Kansas.

By the time Ed's plane landed, the Provider Pathway's knowledgeable Service Representative working with Ed's wife, completed all the arrangements for his mother's care to begin at home the next day, upon her discharge from the hospital. Ed's mother received a 10% discount on her home care services that amounted to hundreds of dollars over the course of her recuperation at home.

The Pathway was also able to arrange for the installation of a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) that will check in on Ed's mother on a regular basis to be sure she is safe and enable her to alert the PERS Call Center if she falls at home again so help can reach her as soon as possible.

Ed and his wife Dorothy feel much more comfortable traveling knowing that his mother can reach the help she needs whenever she may need it.
